Bayer Support the Animal Hero Awards 2015
The Animal Hero Awards 2015 was an evening filled with glitz, glamour and most importantly some truly incredible unsung heroes of the animal world.
Bayer Animal Health and the ‘Be Lungworm Aware’ campaign were extremely proud to sponsor two important categories on the night, ‘Vet of the Year’ and ‘Public Service Animal of the Year’.
Dr Marc Abraham was voted as the deserving winner of ‘Vet of the Year’ category.
The ‘Vet of the Year’ category recognises the selfless contribution made by vets to families all across the UK and those incredible individuals who choose to make their profession more than just a job, going above and beyond to ensure optimum treatment for any animal entrusted into their care.
Dr Marc Abraham regularly appears on TV giving pet advice, has written two books and promotes responsible pet ownership to his large social media following. Five years ago he created the PupAid campaign, an annual fun dog show to raise awareness about puppy farming and has also campaigned in parliament, and launched an e-petition to ban the sale of young puppies and kittens whose mothers were absent, which secured more than 105,000 signatures.
Stella, a police sniffer dog, was voted as the winner of the ‘Public Service Animal of the Year’ category.
‘Public Service Animal of the Year’ is an inspiring category which showcases the brave and selfless role animals play to protect and serve humans every year. The animals nominated often work in extreme conditions to achieve amazing tasks that keep society safe.
Stella the Staffordshire Bull Terrier was taken to the RSPCA West Hatch Animal Centre after she was found roaming the streets. Her owner was traced, but sadly they didn’t want her back. From her work with other potential sniffer dogs, Kennel Supervisor Sue Dicks quickly realised that Stella had a good search drive, and she worked with Stella to develop this. Stella is trained to search for drugs including heroin, cocaine and ecstasy; money including sterling and euros; and guns and ammunition. And has had numerous operational finds - her largest one being £25,000 in cash.

These awards are extremely important to recognise the incredible work done by animals and animal lovers every year across the UK. These categories in particular remind us of the sacrifice made by many animals for the safety and protection of society and by caring veterinary professionals who take their jobs to the next level.”
This year’s awards, which took place last night, were presented by animal enthusiast Amanda Holden and the event saw a whole host of familiar faces coming together to celebrate the amazing contributions made by animals and the people who care for them. The awards celebrate the resilience, bravery and compassion which is so frequently seen in the animal world.
