Launch of new slim microchip brings big opportunities for vet practices

Around 900 pets go missing every day in the UK, yet new research among 2,000 owners has highlighted that only 54 percent of UK pets are microchipped. When owners were asked why they hadn’t microchipped their pet, 27 percent said that the size of the microchip implanter needle caused them to seriously consider whether or not to get their pet microchipped.

The new Tracer Advance Slim microchip is 25 percent smaller than previous Tracer microchips, with an implanter needle diameter that is reduced by 20 percent. The new size means that the microchipping procedure is much more palatable in smaller species and nervous owners can be reassured by the knowledge of the reduced needle dimensions.

Despite Tracer Advance Slim‘s smaller size, reading distance is still maintained and the new removable needle will make sharps disposal easier and more cost effective. The Tracer Advance Slim is a fully encapsulated Bio-Polymer microchip, which is 10 x stronger than glass and less likely to shatter.

It also provides vet practices with a choice of registration options – online, via a fully updated and easier to use website, postal or via participating Practice Management Software providers.

Lauren Mottram, brand manager for Tracer Advance at Bayer Animal Health said: “Our research shows that microchipping can present a huge opportunity for vets by providing a value added service, especially as a quarter of all owners of un-microchipped pets say that they had simply never thought to get it done. By explaining some of the basic information about microchipping and having the conversation with registered AND unregistered clients, we can work together to help ensure Britain’s pets are better protected.”
