Bayer launches final video in Canine Ocular Health series

Bayer Animal Health has launched the third and final educational video in its popular free series ‘Back to Basics’ on canine ophthalmology; part of the Remend™ ‘Vision Matters’ Campaign.

In the final of the series, veterinary ophthalmologist and director of Veterinary Vison Ophthalmic Referrals, Chris Dixon provides guidance on examining the cornea and discusses two of the most common ocular conditions in dogs: corneal ulceration and keratoconjunctivitis sicca.

Keratoconjunctivitis sicca, or dry eye, affects around five percent of all dogs, and up to 20 percent of predisposed breeds, including Pugs, West Highland White Terriers and Cocker Spaniels.

The 15 minute video includes practical advice and tips on how to perform a close examination of the cornea, assess corneal ulceration, how to perform a Schirmer tear test, diagnosing and treating dogs with Keratoconjunctivitis sicca and optimal use of artificial lubrication.

Ocular conditions account for around one in ten canine consultations in first opinion practice. Early diagnosis and treatment can have a significant impact on prognosis for many of these conditions, so to assist with this, Bayer Animal Health has produced this educational series in partnership with Veterinary Vision.

Chris Dixon comments: “This series of videos aims to help vets learn how to perform the fundamental techniques of ophthalmic examination, hopefully enabling them to spot potentially degenerative conditions earlier. The third video in particular delves into practical tips that can help assist vets in treating the common ocular condition Keratoconjunctivitis sicca. The videos have been created in partnership with Bayer as part of their ongoing commitment to training, and aim to help ensure that chronic conditions, such as keratoconjunctivitis sicca, or dry eye, are diagnosed and treated early.”

Hannah Watts, Group Brand Manager at Bayer says “Ocular conditions are commonly encountered in general practice, and early diagnosis of conditions such as keratoconjunctivitis sicca is so important; with this in mind, the aim of these videos is to assist vets in their approach to the canine ocular examination, to help them  feel confident in diagnosing and managing common ocular conditions and recognising when it may be appropriate to seek advice from a veterinary opthalmologist?.”
