Avian Influenza Prevention Zones Declared

In response to the heightened risk of H5N8 highly pathogenic avian influenza, Defra, Scottish Government and Welsh Government have declared Avian Influenza Prevention Zones covering the whole of England, the whole of Scotland and the whole of Wales.

Keepers of poultry and other captive birds are now required to keep their birds indoors, or take appropriate biosecurity steps to keep them separate from wild birds. The zones will be kept under review and will initially remain in place for 30 days.

No cases of H5N8 have been found in the UK and these orders are a precautionary measure to help prevent potential infection from wild birds.
