Celebrate Being a Horse Vet at BEVA Congress
This year BEVA Congress will be celebrating all that’s good about being an equine veterinary surgeon so remember to pack your best smile. There’s nowhere else in Europe that gives you the opportunity to immerse yourself in more than 90 hours of CPD lectures combined with networking, fabled socials and a vibrant exhibition hall. This year BEVA members’ best-loved equine veterinary conference is being held at the popular ICC in central Birmingham from 12-15 September 2018. This year the overriding theme is plenty to smile about. During the three days of Congress BEVA President Jon Pycock will be on a mission to help horse vets focus on the many benefits and pleasures of their job. You can listen to Jon Pycock here .
Themed lectures, workshops and demonstrations, presented by leading international names in the equine veterinary world, will run simultaneously in six lecture halls and the exhibition hall. In addition an extensive clinical research programme will examine the latest in equine veterinary science. There are sessions to suit equine vets and mixed practitioners at any stage in their career, while vet nurses, farriers and equine dental technicians can also enjoy specific lectures focused on their areas of expertise.
Reproduction will be well covered this year, given BEVA President Jon Pycock’s special interest in the topic. Practical presentations will include stimulating early season cyclicity in mares; the use of stem cells in equine reproduction; semen handling and analysis; sperm concentration techniques; twin management, and problems in the late term pregnant mare.
Dr Juan Samper, Associate Dean for students and instruction at the University of Florida College of Veterinary Medicine will be giving the plenary lecture on the challenges and opportunities in equine practice.
An afternoon on succession planning is aimed at helping to cure some of the headaches associated with this inevitable aspect of organisation for the future, while the moral maze debateSpecials manufacturing in the UK will adversely affect equine welfare in the long term is sure to stimulate some strong discussion.
Congress will also be taking a look at the non-clinical aspects of being a veterinary surgeon. Today’s generation of vets need to keep an eye on much more than just their clients’ horses and are expected to have a breadth of knowledge on the essentials of practice management. This year’s programme includes sessions on employee engagement, HR management, marketing, and practice finances.
If role-play is your forte you will enjoy Friday’s demonstration, which will involve a team of actors showing you how to prepare for those situations that can be difficult to manage in equine practice.
Other programme highlights include sessions on the joints and bursae, endocrinology, ophthalmology, glandular gastric disease, poor performance investigations and a lameness workshop, sarcoids, cardiology, neonatology, orthopaedic surgery and orthopaedic imaging, respiratory disease, fractures, responsible use of medicines in practice, intensive care, soft tissue surgery in the sport horse, urogenital surgery, and upper airway disease.
Saturday’s sessions for Veterinary Nurses include anaesthetising the critical care patient, anaesthesia for non-anaesthetists, infectious diseases and a general emergencies workshop. For Equine Dental Technicians and farriers there are two separate full day streams on dentistry and feet and farriery on the Saturday.
