Groundbreaking conference hailed a success

The University of Aberystwyth proved to be the ideal setting for the BSAVA’s Vets Cymru conference held on the 28-29 June 2019. The conference, spearheaded by the BSAVA Cymru/Wales Regional Committee working in conjunction with the Wales Veterinary Science Centre, was the first event of its kind in Wales to offer both small and large animal CPD all under one roof.

Kate O’Sullivan, Chair of the Regional Committee said: “It was gratifying to see an excellent uptake by delegates, proving that there is an appetite for high quality CPD covering all aspects of practice in rural Wales. Also, we were quite overwhelmed by the support shown by our sponsors, who made it all possible.”

The two-day conference featured dedicated lecture streams for veterinary nurses, as well as large and small animal vets, and was accompanied by practical endoscopy sessions run by Burtons and a demonstration of 3D printing technology for appendicular surgery given by CBM Medical. The exhibition hall was full to capacity and provided delegates with an ideal opportunity to engage with sponsors about their goods and services.

The BVA ran discussion sessions on both the Friday and Saturday focusing on antimicrobial resistance, and one of the highlights on Friday afternoon was the Links Project presentation given by Freda Scott-Park, Constable Mike Taggart (North Wales Police) and Ann Williams (Welsh Women’s Aid) on Animal abuse: vets can make a difference.

The Vets Cymru conference proved extremely popular, with delegates and exhibitors alike hailing the event a success.

Delegate feedback included: “Delightfully informal and less commercial than the bigger affairs - keep it this way!  A refreshingly relaxed conference - I will be back”

Sponsor feedback included: “A very friendly atmosphere and some excellent feedback from delegates regarding the quality of the lectures. I loved the Twmpath. The bowl food was a very nice touch, much higher quality than my expectations.”

Speaker feedback included: “Well done on organising a well attended, well planned and enjoyable conference - a job well done.”
