BSAVA digital library proves popular

The British Small Animal Veterinary Association’s new digital library has seen almost 55,000 abstract views and over 12,000 full text downloads in the first four months, latest figures reveal.

Around 3,000 different search terms have been entered at www.bsavalibrary.com since the launch at BSAVA Congress in April, with second and third year qualified vets the most frequent users of free loyalty member benefits using the free access code.

The library is reaching a worldwide audience, with 29 per cent of downloads from outside the UK, including 16 per cent in the USA, and the University of Utrecht and Murdoch University have bought access to all backlist titles for their students.

But a large majority of members are yet to use any of their free downloads, so BSAVA urged members to make the most of its latest phase of digital innovation.

Client Information Leaflets are among the most popular documents – especially for drugs being used under Cascade. BSAVA manuals, Congress Proceedings, BSAVA Formulary and the BSAVA’s Companion magazine are also highly valued by the around 2,400 individuals who have logged into the library so far.

In July the top five viewed articles were:
  1. Clinical conundrum: acute abdominal pain (published in July 2018 Companion)
  2. Brachycephalic Obstructive Airway Syndrome – an update (published in March Companion)
  3. How To…manage canine sinonasal aspergillosis (published in July 2018 Companion)
  4. Prostate gland (BSAVA Manual of Canine and Feline Ultrasonography)
  5. Clinical conundrum: haemoptysis (published in June 2018 Companion)
The digital library enables veterinary professionals to find content across its publications, create their own library of favourite content and receive alerts for new content matching their search terms.

Members can search across BSAVA publications for an individual chapter, article or lecture - including BSAVA manuals, the Formulary and Companion magazine. It also includes the Guide to Procedures, Congress Scientific Proceedings and podcasts, Client Information Leaflets and Scientific Information Sheets, with more content to be added over time.

BSAVA Publications Manager Ian Mellor said: “It is clear that this very user-friendly, online platform has had an immediate impact on the profession and is helping to secure a strong future for published books.

“It’s been really interesting to see how the BSAVA Library has actually been used, compared with our initial expectations, so these early statistics, combined with our wider industry analysis and committee input, will help shape the next phase of development to provide the most useful service for our members, including more bite-sized content tailored to the needs of the profession.”

The online library has seen a huge volume of material transferred across from the BSAVA’s main website and many of the manuals made available in digital format for the first time. Apart from the manuals, virtually everything in the library is available to BSAVA members as part of their membership benefits.

All BSAVA members get five free chapter downloads on first login and the BSAVA has developed a Library Pass enabling pre-purchase of a block of downloads so that chapters can be accessed whenever needed - prices start from just £4.80 per chapter (£2.70 for members). BSAVA members receive a discount on all purchased content.

Benefits include:
  • Search across BSAVA publications for an individual chapter, article or lecture
  • Filter search results by article type, topic, animal, year of publication, and more
  • Purchase whole manuals or individual chapters for online access
  • Access collections of content curated around a theme
  • Set up alerts for new content relating to a topic search, or the latest issue of Companion
